Chair Yoga

60-min CHAIR YOGA

Show up as you are! This accessible flow incorporates a chair for stability and support, allowing you to explore yoga postures your own way. While some movements are seated, we also incorporate standing poses with the chair as a helpful anchor.

Suitable for all fitness levels, this class fosters balance, encourages mindful breathing, and

promotes a sense of well-being in a supportive environment.

Q: What kind of chair should I use?

A: Use a chair with no wheels and no arms, if possible.

For private yoga sessions, please provide your own chairs. I will have one for the teacher/guide chair.

Ideas for additional support:

  1. Set up your space near a wall. Place your hand on the wall for additional support during standing postures.
  2. For standing postures, use the chair for balance as needed (this is why we recommend no wheels on your chair).
  3. Make the practice your own! If you're staying seated for the entire class, that's fine! If the class stands and you want to stay seated, follow the arm and leg movements from your seated position. The most important thing is that you're moving your body and meeting yourself where you are today. :)

Caroline Berkey (RYT-200) has practiced yoga for over 10 years, and began teaching in 2022. She has always valued the importance of chair yoga classes to keep yoga accessible to everyone, and was certified to teach by the Heartwood Yoga Institute in early 2024. Fun fact: the first time she taught chair yoga was in the chair pictured above. She was teaching her dad as he recovered from quintuple bypass open heart surgery. Bonus points if you do some chair yoga outside in the fresh air with your feet in the grass!

Hatha & Vinyasa Yoga

60-min Hatha and/or Vinyasa Yoga

Hatha and Vinyasa styles stem from the ancient practice of Yoga. Long before the physical postures were introduced, Yoga consisted of seated meditation and breathing techniques to "yoke" or unify oneself with a higher purpose, or higher power.

The introduction of "asana" or postures, invited yogis to move their bodies for a period of time before practicing a seated meditation. The many different asana styles were developed in order to strengthen the body, rid the body of aches and pains, and quiet the mind in preparation for this seated meditation.

While both approaches intend to connect the breath, mind, and body together through physical movement, each has it's own unique twist.

What you can expect:

HATHA typically holds postures for a few breaths at a time. Hatha is a general term for yoga postures linked by breath. These postures could range from gentle to demanding, but will be customized to your unique desires and needs.

Building on foundations of Hatha, VINYASA is rooted in the Ashtanga Yoga tradition. In this practice, the postures are typically linked together with one breath, resulting in more postures per class, and an overall faster-paced dynamic practice. Vinyasa postures could also range from gentle to demanding, but the nature of Vinyasa generally makes the heart beat faster, and may be considered a more demanding style. Sun Salutations are a hallmark of Vinyasa-style classes.

The fun part is that we can mix and match these styles, incorporating them both together to create sessions that are customized to your needs.
